Creako was a door.
His entire life was pretty much summed up in that one short statement. He would open. He would close. Sometimes he would open and close in a single smooth motion. Occasionally he would close fast enough to cause a bang. But even the bangs sounded similar and became old news after the first hundred or so occurrences. Sometimes Creako was ajar, but even then he was still a door. It's a universally understood truth: there's not all that much to doors.
If Creako's life could be described in adjectives, one might say was boring. In fact, it was really quite exceedingly dull. Painfully so, in fact. So tiringly monotonous and mundane it hurt him on the inside. It was actually quite excruciatingly dreary, uninspiringly vapid, so unrelievedly tedious it made the life of wallpaper sound gripping by comparison. If he'd written home about it, his parents would probably have died of ennui before they reached the second paragraph. He often considered writing home regardless, just so he'd have something to do.
It's hard to tell whether the sheer lethargic dreariness of Creako's life made him stir-crazy or just deranged, and this point is often speculated about and debated over in the more scholarly circles of the Entrances and Exits Committee. Consensus is, however, that something changed in Creako. Something that made him think outside of the box.
Because one day, Creako decided he'd had enough. There was a vast world out there, and he was determined to see it no matter the cost. Creako proceeded to do what no other door had ever done before him: escape the confines of his unadulteratedly drab existence and go on an adventure.
For weeks, Creako tensed and stretched. He crouched and hopped. He whirled and spun and shook and vibrated and pulsated and performed elegant pirouettes. He used up every last ounce of his strength and energy, yet still he gyrated on. And little by little, his hinges loosened, the pins climbing up and up, until at last they fell away and he was free!
Despite his weariness, Creako couldn't help but dance about in glee. He'd done it! He'd done it at last! Creako took his first few steps away from his former life, and never looked back.
And thus began the epic journey of Creako, Unhinged.
